Distantsmüük refers to the sale of goods or services to consumers where the seller and buyer are not physically present together. This encompasses a wide range of transaction methods, including sales made online, via telephone, through mail order catalogs, or even by vending machines. The key characteristic is the absence of face-to-face interaction at the point of sale.

In Estonia and other European Union countries, distantsmüük is regulated by specific consumer protection laws. These laws aim to safeguard consumers by providing them with certain rights and protections. A significant right for consumers engaging in distantsmüük is the right of withdrawal, often referred to as a "cooling-off period." This allows consumers to return goods or cancel services within a specified timeframe, usually 14 days from receipt of the goods or the conclusion of the contract, without needing to provide a reason.

Sellers engaging in distantsmüük have obligations to provide consumers with clear and comprehensive information before the contract is concluded. This typically includes details about the seller, the main characteristics of the goods or services, the total price, payment methods, delivery arrangements, and the consumer's right of withdrawal. Failure to provide this information can sometimes extend the withdrawal period for the consumer.
