Diskrimineringsnämnden

Diskrimineringsnämnden was a Swedish government agency responsible for handling complaints of discrimination. Its primary role was to investigate alleged breaches of the Discrimination Act (lag om diskriminering och annan

likabehandling). The agency's mandate covered discrimination based on grounds such as gender, transgender identity, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation, and age.

When an individual or a group lodged a complaint with Diskrimineringsnämnden, the agency would typically gather information from both the complainant and the party against whom the complaint was filed. This process involved reviewing documents, conducting interviews, and sometimes seeking expert opinions. The aim was to establish whether discrimination had occurred according to the provisions of the Discrimination Act.

Following its investigation, Diskrimineringsnämnden would issue a decision. These decisions were not legally binding in the same way as court rulings, but they carried significant weight and served as an official assessment of the situation. The agency could recommend remedies, such as changes in practices or compensation, though the enforcement of such recommendations often relied on voluntary compliance or further legal action initiated by the parties involved. Diskrimineringsnämnden was dissolved on January 1, 2009, and its functions were largely transferred to the Equality Ombudsman (Diskrimineringsombudsmannen) and the Discrimination Tribunal (Diskrimineringsnämnden, which was then a tribunal).
