Discone antennas are a type of ultra-wideband omnidirectional antenna. The name "discone" is a portmanteau of "disk" and "cone," which are the two main components of the antenna. It consists of a disk-shaped top element and a cone-shaped bottom element. Both elements are typically made of conductive material and are mounted on a central conductor.

The discone antenna exhibits a very wide operating frequency range, making it suitable for applications where a broad spectrum of frequencies needs to be covered by a single antenna. This wide bandwidth is achieved through the combined geometry of the disk and cone. The disk acts as a capacitive element, while the cone acts as an inductive element. Their interaction allows the antenna to resonate efficiently across a wide range of frequencies.

Due to their omnidirectional radiation pattern, discone antennas radiate and receive equally well in all horizontal directions. This makes them ideal for monitoring, scanning, or transmitting in environments where the direction of the signal source or destination is unknown or constantly changing. They are often used in spectrum monitoring, electronic warfare, and amateur radio applications.

The performance of a discone antenna, including its impedance and radiation pattern, can be influenced by the dimensions of the disk and cone, as well as the spacing between them. Careful design is necessary to achieve the desired wide bandwidth and consistent performance across the intended frequency range. Despite their wide bandwidth, the gain of a discone antenna is typically modest compared to some narrower-band antennas.
