Disambiguating refers to the process of resolving ambiguity in language, data, or signals to identify a single intended meaning or referent. In linguistics and information processing, disambiguation aims to determine which sense of a word, which referent of a name, or which syntactic parse best matches the intended communication.

In natural language processing, disambiguation is central to word sense disambiguation (WSD), named entity disambiguation or linking, and syntactic disambiguation. In information retrieval and search, disambiguation helps interpret queries and select the most relevant results. In knowledge representation, entity disambiguation links mentions to a unique entity in a knowledge base.

Ambiguity types include lexical ambiguity (polysemy and homonymy), where a single form has multiple senses; syntactic ambiguity, where sentence structure can support more than one parse; and referential or contextual ambiguity about which entity or event is meant. Geographical disambiguation (toponym resolution) resolves places that share a name.

Methods for disambiguation include analyzing surrounding context, using statistical models and machine learning, and leveraging lexical resources and knowledge bases such as dictionaries, thesauri, and ontologies. Approaches may be unsupervised, supervised, or semi-supervised; entity linking often applies scoring to choose the best candidate among alternatives and may incorporate external knowledge sources.

Examples include distinguishing "bank" as a financial institution versus a riverside edge, or interpreting "Washington" as a person, a city, or a state. In search and dialogue systems, disambiguation improves relevance and understanding by clarifying user intent and references.

Challenges persist, including limited data for rare senses, domain-specific terminology, cross-language ambiguity, and evolving meanings. Effective disambiguation enhances information retrieval, machine translation, question answering, and conversational agents.
