Diplodactylids

Diplodactylids are a group of extinct, herbivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. They are known for their distinctive, elongated necks and tails, which were used for grazing on vegetation. Diplodactylids are characterized by their long, slender limbs, small heads, and large, flat teeth adapted for grinding plant material.

The most well-known genus within the Diplodactylidae family is Diplodocus, which is renowned for its enormous size, with some specimens reaching lengths of over 100 feet (30 meters). Other notable genera include Apatosaurus, which is often considered synonymous with Diplodocus, and Barosaurus, which had a more robust build and shorter neck.

Diplodactylids are believed to have been semi-aquatic, with their long necks and tails possibly serving as stabilizing structures while they foraged in shallow water or marshy environments. Their diet primarily consisted of soft plants, fruits, and seeds, which they would have harvested using their long necks and powerful jaws.

Fossils of diplodactylids have been discovered on all continents, indicating that they had a widespread distribution during the Late Cretaceous. However, their remains are relatively rare compared to those of other dinosaurs, likely due to their soft tissues and lightweight bones.
