It is expressed in diopters, a unit of measurement indicating the degree to which a lens converges or diverges light. A positive diopter value signifies a converging lens, used to correct hyperopia (farsightedness) or presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). A negative diopter value indicates a diverging lens, used to correct myopia (nearsightedness).

The diopter is the reciprocal of the focal length in meters. For example, a lens with a focal length of 1 meter has a power of +1 diopter, while a lens with a focal length of -0.5 meters has a power of -2 diopters.
