Dimetüüldisulfiid

Dimetüüldisulfiid is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula (CH₃)₂S₂. It is also known as DMDS. This colorless liquid possesses a strong, unpleasant odor, often described as garlicky or resembling rotten eggs. It is naturally produced by some bacteria and is found in the breath of animals and in certain foods.

DMDS is flammable and has a relatively low boiling point. It is soluble in organic solvents but has limited solubility in water. Industrially, it is produced through the oxidation of methanethiol.

In terms of applications, dimethyldisulfide is used as a precursor in the synthesis of other chemicals, including pesticides and pharmaceuticals. It is also employed as a solvent and as a fuel additive. Due to its strong odor, it can be used as an odorant for natural gas, though other compounds are more commonly used for this purpose. In agriculture, it has found use as a soil fumigant to control nematodes and other soil-borne pests.
