Diklórmetán

Diklórmetán, also known as methylene chloride, is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH2Cl2. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet odor. Diklórmetán is a highly effective solvent and is used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications. Its low boiling point and high solvency make it ideal for dissolving various substances, including paints, varnishes, adhesives, and greases.

One of the primary uses of diklórmetán is as a paint stripper. It is also employed in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, as a process solvent in the production of antibiotics and steroids, and in the extraction of certain natural products like caffeine. In the electronics industry, it is used for cleaning and degreasing electronic components. Furthermore, diklórmetán finds application in the production of aerosols and as a blowing agent for polyurethane foams.

Despite its utility, diklórmetán is recognized as a potential health hazard. Exposure can occur through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion. Acute exposure may lead to central nervous system depression, dizziness, nausea, and headache. Chronic exposure has been linked to more serious health issues, including liver and kidney damage. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has classified diklórmetán as a probable human carcinogen. Due to these concerns, regulations regarding its use and exposure limits are in place in many countries. Alternative solvents are increasingly being sought to replace diklórmetán in some applications where feasible.
