Diiodoalkane

Diiodoalkane is a saturated hydrocarbon in which two hydrogen atoms have been replaced by iodine atoms. The general formula is CnH2n+2I2. Depending on the positions of the two iodines, diiodoalkanes are classified as geminal (two iodines on the same carbon, such as 1,1-diiodoethane) or vicinal (on adjacent carbons, such as 1,2-diiodoethane).

Preparation of diiodoalkanes typically involves introducing two iodine atoms into an alkane framework or substituting pre-formed dihaloalkanes with iodide under suitable conditions. Methods include radical iodination of alkanes and, for certain substrates, displacement of dihalides with iodide to furnish the diiodide.

Diiodoalkanes feature relatively weak C–I bonds, which makes them more reactive than non-halogenated alkanes. They are usually heavier and less volatile than their hydrogen-containing analogs, and their physical properties depend on chain length and isomerism. The iodine substituents render these compounds useful as reactive intermediates in organic synthesis.

Reactivity and applications: The C–I bonds serve as good leaving groups in nucleophilic substitution and various coupling reactions. Vicinal diiodides can undergo double elimination with strong base to give alkynes, while geminal diiodides are less prone to this pathway. Reductive dehalogenation and cross-coupling with organometallic reagents are common transformations that capitalize on the iodine substituents.
