Digoksiinintoksikaatio refers to the toxic effects caused by the ingestion of digoxin, a medication commonly used to treat heart conditions such as heart failure and arrhythmias. Digoxin works by inhibiting the sodium-potassium pump in heart cells, which increases the force of heart contractions and improves blood flow.

The symptoms of digoxin toxicity can vary depending on the severity of the overdose and the individual's overall health. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and visual disturbances such as blurred vision or yellowing of the eyes (xanthelasmas). In severe cases, digoxin toxicity can lead to life-threatening arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation, which can result in cardiac arrest.

The diagnosis of digoxin toxicity is typically based on clinical symptoms and confirmed through blood tests that measure digoxin levels. Treatment for digoxin toxicity involves supportive care, such as administering activated charcoal to prevent further absorption of the drug, and the use of specific antidotes like digoxin-specific Fab fragments (Digibind) or digoxin-specific antibodies (Digoxin Immune Fab) to bind and remove the toxic drug from the body. In severe cases, hospitalization and intensive care may be required to manage life-threatening arrhythmias.
