Digiroad

Digiroad is the national digital road dataset of Finland. It provides a centralized inventory of the country’s road and street network, covering highways, main roads, and local streets. The dataset combines geometry with standardized attributes to enable consistent use across agencies and applications.

The data model focuses on road elements such as sections and junctions. Core attributes typically include official road numbers and names, road class or functional class, speed limits, number of lanes, vehicle and access restrictions, weight or height limits, and traffic regulations. Geographic information consists of linear geometry for roads, with start and end points and related administrative or maintenance jurisdictions. Digiroad also incorporates linked information about road signs and related infrastructure where available.

Governance and updates: Digiroad is maintained by Finnish public transport authorities, coordinated by Traficom (the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency) in cooperation with the road administration. The dataset is updated on a regular cycle to reflect changes in the road network and associated attributes, helping to keep analyses and services current.

Access and usage: The data is provided for public sector use and by private sector organizations for mapping, routing, traffic management, planning, and research. Access is offered through API services and downloadable data packages, under terms set by the responsible authorities. Digiroad serves as the national reference dataset for geospatial applications and services in Finland.

History and significance: Initiated to unify disparate road data across agencies and to support digitalization, Digiroad has become a foundational source of road information in Finland for national and local planning, analysis, and navigation initiatives.
