Diffusionstal

Diffusionstal is a term used in materials science and geochemistry to describe diffusion-driven, mineral-like structures that form in porous media under concentration gradients. The term combines diffusion with stalactite- or stalagmite-like morphologies to denote elongated, often branching precipitates produced by diffusing solutes.

Formation occurs when a solution containing sparingly soluble species diffuses into a region with lower saturation or into a solid seed. Under low convection, diffusive transport dominates and local supersaturation triggers precipitation along the advancing diffusion front. The resulting growth can yield slender, columnar, or dendritic features that radiate from the seed or boundary.

Morphology and composition vary with chemical system and conditions. Common forms include needle-like filaments, hollow tubes, or capstone-like prisms, often with layered or concentric microstructures. Materials reported in experiments include carbonate-like, silica-like, and phosphate-like phases, though diffusionstal is a descriptive term rather than a fixed mineral species.

Research and applications: diffusionstal has been studied in gel media and porous rocks to understand pattern formation and mineral deposition during diagenesis or corrosion.
