Diffusionshemmungen

Diffusionshemmungen, also known as diffusion barriers or diffusion retarders, are materials or layers designed to significantly slow down or prevent the movement of moisture vapor through a building envelope. This process is crucial for maintaining the thermal performance of insulation and preventing moisture-related problems such as mold growth, rot, and structural damage. In construction, diffusionshemmungen are typically installed on the warm side of the insulation layer in walls, roofs, and floors. Their placement is critical; if installed incorrectly, they can trap moisture rather than preventing it.

The effectiveness of a diffusionshemmung is measured by its water vapor diffusion resistance factor, denoted by the Greek letter mu (μ). A higher mu value indicates a greater resistance to vapor diffusion. Common materials used as diffusionshemmungen include aluminum foil, specialized plastic films, and some types of paints or membranes.
