Dieselsähköistä refers to a diesel-electric propulsion system commonly found in locomotives and ships. This system utilizes a diesel engine to generate electricity, which then powers electric motors that drive the wheels or propellers. Unlike a purely mechanical diesel engine, the diesel-electric setup offers greater flexibility in power transmission and control.

The core components of a diesel-electric system include a diesel engine, an alternator or generator, traction motors (in locomotives) or propulsion motors (in ships), and a control system. The diesel engine's rotational energy is converted into electrical energy by the alternator. This electricity is then supplied to the electric motors, which produce the necessary torque for movement. The control system allows for precise regulation of engine speed and motor output, enabling efficient operation under varying load conditions.

One of the primary advantages of diesel-electric propulsion is its efficiency, particularly at lower speeds and during frequent starts and stops. The electric motors can deliver high torque from a standstill, and the system can be optimized for fuel economy by operating the diesel engine at its most efficient RPM. Furthermore, diesel-electric systems are generally simpler mechanically than traditional diesel-mechanical or diesel-hydraulic systems, potentially leading to lower maintenance costs. They also offer smoother acceleration and a quieter operation.

Diesel-electric technology has been widely adopted in rail transport for decades, powering a vast majority of modern diesel locomotives. In maritime applications, it is used in various vessels, from ferries to large cargo ships, providing a reliable and efficient means of propulsion.
