Diensträder

Diensträder are bicycles provided by an employer to employees for work-related and private use. They form part of corporate mobility programs and are often financed through leasing arrangements with specialized providers. In practice, an employee may use the bicycle for commuting, business trips, and leisure, while the employer benefits from potential reductions in car traffic and emissions. Bicycles can be conventional or electric (e-bikes).

Implementation typically involves the employer acquiring the bike and allowing the employee to use it in exchange for a monthly salary deduction, a model known as a salary sacrifice. The exact tax treatment varies; in Germany, the private use of a Dienstrad is usually treated as a taxable benefit in kind, with the value determined by the employer’s policy and applicable tax rules. Some programs include maintenance, insurance, and repairs, sometimes with costs shared between employer and employee.

Impact and considerations: Diensträder support sustainable mobility, reduce commuting costs for employees, and can improve health and job satisfaction.
