Dielektroforeesissa

Dielektroforeesissa is a Finnish term that translates to "dielectrophoresis" in English. Dielectrophoresis is a phenomenon where a non-uniform electric field induces a force on a dielectric particle that is suspended in a fluid. This force arises from the interaction between the induced dipole moment of the particle and the non-uniform electric field. The direction and magnitude of the dielectrophoretic force depend on the dielectric properties of both the particle and the surrounding medium, as well as the frequency and gradient of the electric field.

The principle of dielectrophoresis is utilized in various scientific and technological applications. It can be used to manipulate and separate particles based on their dielectric properties. For example, dielectrophoresis is employed in microfluidic devices for cell sorting, focusing, and manipulation. It can distinguish between different types of cells, such as live and dead cells, or cells with different internal compositions. In biochemistry and molecular biology, dielectrophoresis can be used to manipulate DNA, proteins, and other biomolecules.

The basic setup for observing or utilizing dielectrophoresis typically involves two or more electrodes placed in close proximity within a chamber containing the fluid and the suspended particles. When an alternating voltage is applied to the electrodes, it creates a non-uniform electric field. Particles that are more polarizable than the surrounding medium will be attracted towards regions of high electric field gradient, while particles that are less polarizable will be repelled and move towards regions of low electric field gradient. This selective movement allows for separation and manipulation.
