Dichtheitsprüfung, also known as leak testing, is a process used to determine if a container or system is impermeable to fluids or gases. This is crucial in many industries to ensure product integrity, safety, and environmental protection. The principle behind most dichtheitsprüfung methods is to introduce a medium (gas or liquid) into the system and then monitor for any pressure changes or the escape of the medium.

Commonly, air or inert gases like nitrogen are used for pressure-based tests. The system is pressurized, and then its ability to maintain that pressure over a specified period is measured. A drop in pressure indicates a leak. Alternatively, a vacuum can be applied, and the rate at which the system gains pressure from the outside environment is observed. For liquid-filled systems, visual inspection for drips or the use of specialized detection agents can be employed.

They are essential in the automotive industry for fuel systems and radiators, in the aerospace sector for critical components, and in manufacturing for packaging of sensitive goods.
