Diatoni

Diatoni is a term that can refer to several distinct concepts, primarily in the realms of music and biology. In music theory, a diatonic scale is a seven-note musical scale consisting of five whole steps and two half steps. The most common examples are the major scale and the natural minor scale. These scales form the basis of much Western music and are characterized by their relatively stable and consonant sound. The intervals within a diatonic scale are predictable and create a sense of resolution.

In biology, particularly in the study of microscopic organisms, the term "diatom" refers to a major group of algae. Diatoms are unicellular eukaryotes, distinguished by their unique cell wall, or frustule, which is made of silica. These intricate and often beautiful structures are highly diverse in shape and pattern. Diatoms play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, contributing significantly to photosynthesis and forming the base of many food webs. Fossilized diatom frustules, known as diatomaceous earth, have numerous industrial applications. The distinction between these two meanings is important, as "diatoni" as a plural form is not standard in either context; rather, the singular is "diaton" for the musical scale concept and "diatom" for the alga.
