Diagonální

Diagonální is a Czech adjective that denotes a relationship to a diagonal line or direction. The term is derived from the Latin root diagonal, which in turn is rooted in the Greek words diocanos (“in a straight line”). In Czech, the adjective is formed by adding the suffix -ální to the noun diagonal.

The word is primarily used in technical and scientific contexts, particularly in geometry, mathematics, and architecture. It describes properties, measurements, or orientations that involve or follow a diagonal line. For example, a diagonální úhel (diagonal angle) refers to the angle formed by two intersecting diagonal lines. In architectural drawing, a diagonální cesta (diagonal path) indicates a path that cuts across a conventional grid.

Diagonální is also used in everyday language to describe items or movements that are not aligned with primary axes. The concept of diagonal geometry extends to more specialized fields such as trigonometry, where diagonální derivace (diagonal derivative) denotes differentiation along a diagonal direction in multi-dimensional space. In computer graphics, a diagonální úprava (diagonal adjustment) might refer to adjusting pixel coordinates along a diagonal vector. The term is also employed metaphorically in literature and rhetoric to signify a non-linear or alternative course.
