Diabelli

Diabelli is a surname. The most famous bearer of this name was Anton Diabelli (1781-1858), an Austrian composer and music publisher. He was born in Mattsee, Austria, and became a significant figure in Viennese musical life during the early 19th century. Diabelli was a prolific composer himself, known for his chamber music, piano works, and pedagogical compositions.

However, Anton Diabelli is perhaps most widely remembered for his Waltz in A major. This simple, charming piece became the subject of a famous composition project. Diabelli solicited variations on his waltz from many of the leading composers of the day, including Franz Schubert, Carl Czerny, and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. The project was intended to showcase the talent of Austrian composers. Ludwig van Beethoven was also invited to contribute, and he famously expanded upon Diabelli's theme by composing thirty-three variations, which are now known as the Diabelli Variations, Op. 120, one of his most substantial keyboard works.

Beyond his musical contributions, Anton Diabelli was also a successful music publisher. He established his own publishing house in Vienna, which became a prominent outlet for contemporary music. His publishing activities helped to disseminate the works of many composers of his era.
