Desulfonointi
Desulfonointi, or desulfonation, is a chemical reaction in which a sulfonyl group is removed from a molecule. In practice the term covers the removal of sulfonic acid groups (–SO3H), sulfonate esters (–SO3R) and related sulfonyl functionalities from organic substrates. Desulfonation is common in both small‑molecule synthesis and polymer chemistry, often used to reveal a preexisting hydrocarbon or phenolic core after the sulfonyl group has served as an activating or protecting group.
Substrates and outcomes vary. For arenes bearing sulfonic acid groups (ArSO3H), desulfonation can regenerate the parent
Common methods include thermal desulfonation—high‑temperature treatment, sometimes in acidic media; catalytic hydrogenolysis—hydrogen gas with metal catalysts
