Desimaalimuotoa, or decimal representation, is a fundamental concept in mathematics that describes how to write numbers using a base-10 system. This system, also known as the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, relies on ten distinct digits: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. The position of each digit within a number determines its value.

In the decimal system, a decimal point is used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part. Digits to the left of the decimal point represent powers of ten, starting with units (10^0), then tens (10^1), hundreds (10^2), and so on, increasing as you move further left. Digits to the right of the decimal point represent fractional parts, corresponding to powers of one-tenth (10^-1), one-hundredth (10^-2), one-thousandth (10^-3), and so on, decreasing as you move further right.

For example, the number 123.456 can be broken down as follows: 1 is in the hundreds place (1 * 100), 2 is in the tens place (2 * 10), 3 is in the units place (3 * 1), 4 is in the tenths place (4 * 0.1), 5 is in the hundredths place (5 * 0.01), and 6 is in the thousandths place (6 * 0.001).

Decimal representation allows for the precise expression of both integers and rational and irrational numbers. It is the standard system used globally for arithmetic calculations and scientific notation, making it a cornerstone of modern mathematics and its applications.
