Desideravamos

Desideravamos is a municipality located in the southeastern region of Brazil, within the state of São Paulo. The town covers an area of approximately 110 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 12,300 residents as of the 2020 census. The local economy is largely based on small‑scale agriculture, with coffee, beans, and citrus fruits being the principal crops, as well as a modest dairy industry that supplies neighboring urban centers.

The settlement was founded in the early 18th century during the period of colonial expansion. Its name derives from the Latin phrase “desideravamos,” meaning “we desired,” reflecting the aspirations of early colonial settlers who sought fertile land and new opportunities. The town developed around a cattle ranch that was repurposed into a community with a central plaza, church, and municipal buildings. During the 19th century, the arrival of the railroad extended the village’s economic reach and facilitated the transport of agricultural produce to larger markets.

Geographically, Desideravamos lies in a temperate climate zone with an average annual rainfall of 1,200 millimetres, which supports its agricultural profile. The municipality is situated approximately 90 kilometres west of the city of São Paulo, connected by a state highway that allows for relatively easy access to regional trade hubs.

Culturally, Desideravamos maintains several communal traditions, most notably its annual Festa de São João, a religious carnival that blends Catholic rites with local folkloric music and dance. The town’s historical churches, especially the 19th‑century São Francisco de Assis Church, are recognized for their preserved colonial architecture and serve as focal points for cultural tourism.
