Descriptivistien is a term that refers to individuals who advocate for a descriptivist approach to language. This perspective emphasizes describing how a language is actually used by its speakers, rather than prescribing how it should be used. Descriptivists focus on observing and documenting linguistic phenomena as they occur in natural contexts, considering variation and change as inherent and legitimate aspects of language.

The core tenet of descriptivism is that language is a dynamic entity shaped by its users. Instead of adhering to rigid rules that dictate "correct" grammar or usage, descriptivists analyze the patterns and structures present in everyday speech and writing. They believe that language evolves organically, and that what might be considered non-standard by prescriptive norms is simply a reflection of linguistic progress or regional differences.

This approach contrasts with prescriptivism, which seeks to establish and enforce rules for language use, often based on historical precedent or the usage of perceived elite speakers. Descriptivistien would argue that prescriptive rules can be artificial and may not accurately represent the lived experience of language users. Their work often involves collecting data through corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, and ethnographic studies to build a comprehensive understanding of language in practice.
