Depuis

Depuis is a French preposition and adverb used to mark the starting point of a situation in the past that continues into the present, or to indicate the duration of a situation up to the present.

Usage with a point in time or a duration

Since a point in time: depuis 2010, depuis lundi, depuis ce matin. Example: J’habite ici depuis 2010.

With a duration: depuis deux mois, depuis longtemps, depuis que deux heures. Example: Elle étudie le français depuis deux ans. The construction often accompanies the present tense, reflecting ongoing action starting in the past.

Tense and compatible structures

Since the action began in the past and continues now, depuis is typically paired with the present or the imperfect: Je vis ici depuis 2010. Je travaillais ici depuis deux heures lorsque le coup de téléphone a sonné. In narrative past contexts, the imperfect is common: Il vivait à Paris depuis 2005.

Depuis que

When introducing a clause, depuis que is used: Depuis que tu es parti, tout a changé. The verb in the dependent clause can be in a variety of tenses (passé composé, présent, etc.), depending on the time frame.

Differences with pendant and pour

Pendant denotes a completed duration in the past or future (the whole period of the action): Il a vécu ici pendant deux ans. Pour indicates a duration planned for the future or a general duration: Je resterai ici pour deux semaines. Depuis, by contrast, emphasizes the starting point and ongoing nature of the situation.

Questions and negation

Common questions include Depuis quand … ? or Depuis combien de temps … ? Je n’habite plus ici depuis 2010. Il n’a pas dormi ici depuis lundi.
