Dentzel refers to the Dentzel Carousel Company, an influential American maker of hand-carved wooden carousels. The company was founded by Gustav Dentzel, a German immigrant and master woodcarver, who established operations in Philadelphia in the late 1860s. Dentzel developed a repertoire of lifelike animals—horses, lions, tigers, and other figures—carved in the round and mounted on multi-row carousels. The figures were renowned for their anatomical accuracy, expressive manes, glass eyes, and polychrome finishes, and the firm helped popularize the contemporary American carousel in amusement parks and traveling shows.
