Deltaformációk refers to the geological processes that shape river deltas. Deltas are landforms created by deposition when a river flows into a body of standing water, such as an ocean, sea, or lake. As the river's velocity decreases upon entering the larger water body, it loses its ability to carry its sediment load. This sediment, primarily silt, sand, and clay, is then deposited at the river mouth, gradually building up new land.

The morphology of a delta is influenced by a combination of fluvial processes (river dynamics) and marine or lacustrine processes (the dynamics of the receiving water body). Fluvial processes include the river's discharge, sediment load, and grain size. Marine or lacustrine influences include wave action, tides, and longshore currents. These forces can rework the deposited sediment, redistributing it and influencing the delta's shape.

Common delta shapes include bird's-foot deltas, arcuate deltas, and cuspate deltas, each reflecting a different balance of fluvial and marine/lacustrine forces. For example, bird's-foot deltas, like that of the Mississippi River, are characterized by long, finger-like distributaries extending far into the sea, indicating that fluvial processes dominate over wave and tidal action. Arcuate deltas, such as the Nile Delta, have a more rounded or fan shape, suggesting a stronger influence from wave action.
