Delphic

Delphic is an adjective relating to Delphi, the ancient Greek sanctuary and city, and to the Oracle of Delphi. The Delphic Oracle, dedicated to Apollo, was a major center of prophecy in the classical world. The term Delphic is commonly used to describe statements that are obscure, cryptic, or ambiguous, reflecting the reputedly enigmatic character of the oracle's responses.

Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in central Greece and was the site of the Pythian Games. The Delphic tradition influenced Greek religion, art, and politics, and the site is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site with temples, treasuries, and the famous Sacred Way.

In modern usage, Delphic appears in criticism, scholarship, and culture to characterize language or ideas that are difficult to interpret or intentionally indirect. It can also function as a proper noun, for example as the name of a British electronic rock band from Manchester, which has released albums and singles in contemporary music.
