It is described as a medium-sized mollusk with a gelatinous mantle, a broad fin margin, eight arms, two elongated feeding tentacles, and a ring of bioluminescent photophores around the mantle. The animal is depicted as using mucus-based nets to ensnare plankton and small crustaceans, and it can modulate light to aid in ambush and camouflage.

Habitat and ecology within the fiction place defambmus in the dark, high-pressure trenches of a fictional equatorial ocean, at depths roughly between 600 and 1500 meters. It forms loose aggregations during feeding periods and is considered an opportunistic predator. Some narratives describe a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria that enhance its glow for signaling or luring prey.
