Deduktioita, also known as deductive reasoning, is a form of logical reasoning that starts with a general statement or hypothesis and examines the possibilities to find a specific instance that fits that hypothesis. It is one of the two basic methods of valid reasoning, the other being inductive reasoning. Deductive reasoning is often used in mathematics and philosophy, where it is used to prove theorems and derive logical conclusions.

The structure of deductive reasoning is typically as follows: a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion. The major premise is a general statement or hypothesis, the minor premise is a specific instance that fits the major premise, and the conclusion is a specific instance that follows logically from the major and minor premises.

For example, consider the following deductive argument:

Major Premise: All humans are mortal.

Minor Premise: Socrates is a human.

Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

In this example, the major premise is a general statement about all humans, the minor premise is a specific instance of Socrates being a human, and the conclusion is a specific instance of Socrates being mortal.

Deductive reasoning is considered valid if the conclusion follows logically from the premises. However, deductive reasoning is not always sound, as the premises may be false. For example, if the major premise were false (e.g., "All humans are immortal"), then the conclusion would also be false, even though the argument is valid.

Deductive reasoning is often contrasted with inductive reasoning, which starts with specific observations and generalizes to a broader conclusion. While deductive reasoning is considered more certain, inductive reasoning is often used in scientific research to make predictions and test hypotheses.
