Dativerecipient is a term used in linguistics to refer to the entity that receives something as a result of an action, particularly in sentences that involve transfer or give-and-take. In languages that mark the dative case, the recipient typically appears in the dative form, functioning as the indirect object of the verb.

In German, for example, the dative recipient is explicit in sentences like Ich schenke dem Kind ein Buch. Here, dem Kind is in the dative case and marks who receives the book. In Russian, a similar role is shown by the dative form as in Я дал другу книгу, where другу is the recipient in the dative case. In English, there is no distinct dative case; the recipient is usually expressed as an indirect object or with a prepositional phrase, as in I gave a book to the child.

Grammatically, the dative recipient is often the indirect object in ditransitive constructions (verbs that take both a direct object and an indirect object, such as give, send, or grant). The direct object is the thing transferred, while the recipient is the beneficiary or recipient of that transfer. Word order and case marking vary by language: some languages place the recipient before the direct object, others allow flexible order; some rely on case to mark the recipient, while others use prepositions like to or for.

Cross-linguistically, the concept of a dative recipient encompasses both morphologically marked dative forms and prepositional expressions that designate the recipient of the action. It is a central notion in understanding how languages encode possession, transfer, and beneficiary relations.
