Datapersistens, or data persistence, refers to the property of data to outlive the process that created it, remaining accessible after a system restart or a crash. In computing, persistence is achieved by storing data in non-volatile storage and by applying integrity and consistency mechanisms to prevent loss or corruption.

Various technologies enable persistence, including relational databases, NoSQL stores, file systems, and object stores. Techniques such as write-ahead logging, journaling, and append-only logs help guarantee durability in the face of failures. Advances in persistent memory and solid-state storage have improved the speed of durable data, enabling memory-resident data to be backed by non-volatile storage.

Durability models differ: some systems strive for strong durability with synchronous writes and ACID transactions; others use weaker guarantees with eventual consistency or BASE approaches and asynchronous persistence. Data can be stored as transactional records, event streams, or versioned histories, and several designs rely on replayable logs or snapshots.

Common persistence patterns include traditional relational databases, document stores, key-value stores, and event-sourcing architectures that persist domain events. Considerations when designing persistence include data integrity, backups, replication, disaster recovery, versioning, and access control. Performance concerns involve caching and buffering, which must be managed to avoid data loss in power failures.
