Data quality management (DQM) is the set of processes, governance structures, and technical practices used to ensure that data is accurate, complete, reliable, and fit for its intended use. It covers data throughout its lifecycle, from collection and storage to processing, analysis, and archiving.

Key dimensions, often described as data quality dimensions, include accuracy (correctness of values), completeness (presence of required data), consistency (agreement across systems), timeliness (up-to-date data), validity (conformity to formats and business rules), and uniqueness (freedom from duplicates).

Core components include data governance to assign ownership and accountability, data profiling to assess quality, and data cleansing or enrichment to correct defects. Data quality rules, validation, deduplication, and lineage tracking support automated checks. Ongoing monitoring and issue remediation ensure problems are detected and resolved, with metrics feeding continuous improvement.

Data quality management operates within a broader data management program. Roles such as data owners, data stewards, and data quality managers establish responsibilities, define quality targets, and approve remediation actions. Quality metrics and dashboards provide visibility into data health and guide prioritization.

Standards and approaches, including ISO 8000 and the DAMA-DMBOK framework, promote consistency across organizations. Techniques such as data profiling, rule-based cleansing, data enrichment, and anomaly detection—often aided by specialized tools and automation—help scale quality efforts across large or multi-source environments.

Challenges include data silos, legacy systems, evolving data sources, measuring subjective quality aspects, and balancing cost with business value. Effective DQM requires alignment with data governance, clear ownership, and sustainable processes rather than one-off data cleansing efforts.
