Daphnes

Daphnes are a genus of deciduous or evergreen shrubs and small trees in the family Thymelaeaceae. Known for their often fragrant flowers, daphnes are widely cultivated for ornamental purposes. The genus is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa.

The most common characteristic of daphnes is their sweet-smelling, tubular flowers, which typically appear in clusters. These flowers can be white, pink, red, or purple, and bloom in late winter or early spring, sometimes even in autumn. The leaves are usually simple and alternate, though some species have opposite or whorled leaves. Daphnes are generally slow-growing and prefer well-drained soil and a location with partial shade or full sun.

Many daphne species are known for their toxicity. All parts of the plant, especially the berries, can be poisonous if ingested, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The sap can also cause skin irritation. Despite their toxicity, daphnes are popular in gardens for their early and persistent blooms and pleasant fragrance. Some popular species include Daphne odora, Daphne mezereum, and Daphne laureola. Careful handling and planting away from children and pets are recommended.
