Dampfdurchlässigkeit refers to the ability of a material to allow water vapor to pass through it. This property is crucial in many construction and manufacturing applications, particularly in managing moisture within enclosed spaces. Materials with high dampfdurchlässigkeit permit water vapor to escape easily, preventing condensation and its associated problems like mold growth and material degradation. Conversely, materials with low dampfdurchlässigkeit act as vapor barriers, preventing moisture from passing through.

The measurement of dampfdurchlässigkeit is often expressed as a diffusion resistance factor, denoted by the Greek letter mu (µ). A higher mu value indicates lower dampfdurchlässigkeit, meaning the material is more resistant to vapor diffusion. Alternatively, it can be expressed as water vapor diffusion equivalent air layer thickness (sd-value), which represents the thickness of a stationary air layer that would have the same diffusion resistance as the material in question. A lower sd-value signifies higher dampfdurchlässigkeit.
