Dadra

Dadra is a term used to refer to more than one concept in Indian culture and geography. It commonly denotes a Hindustani music form as well as a geographic region in western India.

In music, Dadra is a semi-classical vocal genre that developed in North India. It features light, melodic compositions and is typically performed in a six-beat rhythmic cycle known as dadra tala. The style is noted for its lyrical, approachable melodies and is used for romantic or devotional themes. Dadra can be heard in traditional performances as well as contemporary Indian classical performances, and it has influenced various singers and composers within the Hindustani tradition.

Geographically, Dadra is part of the union territory formed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu in western India. The territory lies between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra and includes the enclave of Dadra and the larger Nagar Haveli region, with Silvassa as its administrative center. Historically, the area was a Portuguese enclave until the mid-20th century. In 2020, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged to form a single union territory under a combined name, which continues to administer the region as a unified entity within India.
