Dachflächenbegrünung, also known as green roofing, refers to the practice of growing plants on the surface of a building's roof. This can range from simple sedum mats to extensive gardens with trees and shrubs. The primary goal is to enhance the ecological and economic functions of the roof.

Ecologically, green roofs contribute to biodiversity by providing habitats for insects and birds. They help manage stormwater runoff by absorbing rainwater, which reduces the strain on drainage systems and can mitigate urban flooding. Furthermore, they improve air quality by filtering pollutants and producing oxygen. The vegetation also provides thermal insulation, reducing heating costs in winter and cooling costs in summer, thereby lowering energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Economically, green roofs can extend the lifespan of the underlying roof membrane by protecting it from UV radiation and extreme temperature fluctuations. The installation of a green roof involves several layers: a root barrier, a drainage layer, a filter fabric, the growing medium, and the vegetation. Proper design and construction are crucial to ensure the structural integrity of the building and the long-term success of the green roof. Maintenance requirements vary depending on the type of green roof, with extensive systems generally needing less upkeep than intensive ones.
