Dabih

Dabih is a traditional star name used in astronomy for a star in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus. It is most commonly identified with Beta Capricorni, one of the brighter stars in Capricornus, and in many historical sources the name refers specifically to the brighter component within that multiple-star system. The name Dabih comes from Arabic al-dāhib or al-dābiḥ, meaning "the butcher," reflecting its role in the pair of stars representing the head of the sea-goat; in some traditions this star is paired with Algedi, meaning "the billy-goat," to form a two-star asterism.

In modern astronomy, Dabih / Beta Capricorni is recognized as a multiple-star system. It comprises at least two visible components, and higher-resolution observations reveal additional companions in orbit around the brighter star. The system is a point of light in the southern sky and is located within the boundaries of Capricornus near the ecliptic. It is brighter than many neighboring stars, making it accessible to small telescopes and suitable for educational viewing.

The name has persisted in star catalogs and is used by the International Astronomical Union as a traditional proper name for the star, preserving cultural heritage in contemporary naming conventions.
