DOCSISperhe is a term sometimes used informally to refer to the family of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) standards. DOCSIS is a suite of standards used for delivering high-speed Internet access over existing coaxial cable television infrastructure. It allows cable operators to provide broadband internet services to subscribers.

The DOCSIS family has evolved significantly over the years. The initial DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 standards provided basic broadband capabilities. DOCSIS 2.0 introduced improvements in upstream speed and overall performance. A major leap occurred with DOCSIS 3.0, which enabled channel bonding, allowing modems and cable systems to combine multiple channels for much higher download and upload speeds. This standard paved the way for gigabit-speed services.

The latest iteration, DOCSIS 3.1, further enhances performance by introducing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and low-density parity-check (LDPC) coding. These advancements allow for even greater spectral efficiency and higher speeds, often reaching multi-gigabit download capabilities and significantly improved upload speeds. DOCSIS 4.0 is currently under development, promising further enhancements in speed and latency.

The "perhe" or "family" aspect highlights the continuous development and backward compatibility inherent in the DOCSIS standards. Newer versions are designed to work with older infrastructure to some extent, allowing for gradual upgrades by cable operators and a smooth transition for consumers. The DOCSIS standards are crucial for the competitive landscape of broadband internet provision worldwide.
