DNAkopioinnin, also known as DNA replication, is the biological process by which a double-stranded DNA molecule is copied to produce two identical DNA molecules. This process is essential for cell division and heredity, ensuring that genetic information is passed accurately from one generation of cells to the next.

The replication process begins with the unwinding of the parental DNA double helix, a task carried out by enzymes called helicases. This unwinding separates the two strands, exposing the nucleotide bases. Each separated strand then serves as a template for the synthesis of a new complementary strand. Free nucleotides present in the cell pair with their complementary bases on the template strands (adenine with thymine, and guanine with cytosine).

The enzyme DNA polymerase plays a crucial role in adding these new nucleotides to the growing strand, forming phosphodiester bonds. DNA replication is a semi-conservative process, meaning that each new DNA molecule consists of one original (template) strand and one newly synthesized strand. This mechanism ensures high fidelity in copying the genetic code.
