DMK

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is a political party based in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, with influence in national politics through coalitions. It is one of the two major parties in Tamil Nadu, alongside AIADMK, and it also contests elections in neighboring regions as part of broader alliances. The party’s symbol is the rising sun.

DMK originated in 1949 when C. N. Annadurai broke away from the Dravidar Kazhagam, led by E. V. Ramasamy, known as Periyar. The DMK embraced the Dravidian movement’s emphasis on Tamil identity, social justice, and reform, and it pursued programs aimed at language rights, education, welfare, and anti-caste measures. In 1967, the DMK led Tamil Nadu to victory in state elections, marking the first time a party other than the Indian National Congress formed the government in the state.

Ideology and platforms associated with the DMK center on Tamil nationalism, social equity, secularism, and state autonomy within India. The party has supported welfare schemes, inclusive development, and a strong role for Tamil language and culture in public life. It has historically advocated for a federal balance that protects state rights within the Indian Union.

Organization and leadership have featured prominent figures such as M. Karunanidhi, who served as chief minister in multiple terms, and M. K. Stalin, the party president and chief minister of Tamil Nadu since 2021. The DMK operates a nationwide and regional organizational structure, including youth and women’s wings, and engages in national politics through coalitions. Its governance and electoral success have made it a central force in Tamil Nadu and in national coalition dynamics.
