DICOMformaadis

DICOMformaadis is a proposed framework for exchanging structured form data within the DICOM imaging ecosystem. It is not an official DICOM standard, but a concept intended to extend how forms, checklists, consent records, and patient-reported information can be captured and moved alongside medical images and reports.

The goal of DICOMformaadis is to standardize templates and form instances so radiology departments, electronic health records, and picture archiving and communication systems can exchange discrete data elements without resorting to free text. This supports automated data extraction for reporting, quality assurance, consent verification, and workflow orchestration within imaging workflows.

Technically, the framework envisions integrating form data with DICOM objects using existing data model primitives, such as DICOM Structured Reporting, augmented by a form template descriptor. Data elements would be tagged with unique identifiers, employ standardized value representations, and be serialized in DICOMweb payloads or mapped to common interchange formats (CSV/JSON) for broader interoperability.

Status and adoption are exploratory. DICOMformaadis remains a concept under discussion or in early research stages rather than an official standard. Pilot implementations explore template-driven data capture in PACS and RIS environments, with ongoing considerations for alignment with DICOMweb and for interoperability with HL7 FHIR via bridging approaches.
