DCSjärjestelmään, often referred to as a Distributed Control System (DCS), is a computerised control system for a process or industry. It consists of a network of controllers distributed throughout a plant or facility. These controllers are interconnected and communicate with each other and with a central supervisor.

A DCS is typically used in industrial settings such as chemical plants, power generation facilities, water treatment plants, and manufacturing operations. Its primary function is to monitor and control various process parameters like temperature, pressure, flow, and level. It achieves this by collecting data from sensors, processing it, and then sending commands to actuators such as valves and motors.

The distributed nature of a DCS offers several advantages. It allows for modularity, meaning the system can be expanded or modified easily. It also enhances reliability, as the failure of one controller does not necessarily bring down the entire system. Operators can monitor and manage the entire process from a central control room, providing a comprehensive overview and enabling efficient decision-making.
