Dépeignage

Dépeignage is a term used in art history and criticism to describe the act of removing or obscuring representational elements from an artwork. This process can occur in various ways, either by the artist themselves during the creation of the work or by subsequent actions, such as vandalism or restoration. The effect of dépeignage is to shift the viewer's focus from the subject matter to the formal qualities of the artwork, such as line, color, texture, and composition.

Artists might engage in dépeignage intentionally to explore abstract principles or to create a sense of mystery or ambiguity. For example, an artist might gradually reduce the detail in a figure until it is barely recognizable, emphasizing its form over its identity. Conversely, dépeignage can also be an unintentional consequence of damage or alteration. Fading pigments, overpainting, or physical abrasion can all lead to a loss of representational clarity, inadvertently transforming a figurative work into something more abstract.

The concept of dépeignage is closely related to the broader artistic movements that explored abstraction, such as Impressionism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism, where the emphasis moved away from strict mimesis.
