Cytoplasmatiska

Cytoplasmatiska is an adjective used in Swedish to describe things pertaining to the cytoplasm, the substance inside a cell that lies between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. In English, the corresponding term is cytoplasmic. The word is commonly found in biomedical texts to refer to cytoplasmic components, processes, or alterations, as opposed to nuclear or extracellular features.

The cytoplasm consists of the cytosol, a gel-like intracellular fluid containing enzymes, ions, and nutrients, plus the organelles suspended within it, such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and ribosomes. The cytoskeleton provides structure and assist in movement and organization. The cytoplasm is enclosed by the plasma membrane, with the nucleus occupying a separate compartment in eukaryotic cells.

Functions of the cytoplasmic realm include hosting many metabolic pathways, such as glycolysis, and supporting protein synthesis on ribosomes located on the rough endoplasmic reticulum or freely in the cytosol. It also facilitates intracellular transport, signaling, and cytoskeletal dynamics that influence cell shape and movement. In plant and some protist cells, cytoplasmic streaming moves cytoplasm and organelles around the cell.
