Cyklonisk

Cyklonisk is a Swedish adjective meaning cyclonic, i.e., relating to cyclones or to swirling motion in the atmosphere. The root is from cyclone, from the Greek kyklos “circle,” with the standard Swedish suffix -isk indicating a property.

In meteorology, cyklonisk describes weather systems and wind fields associated with low-pressure centers. A cyklonisk system typically features organized convection, rainbands, and a rotating wind field. In the Northern Hemisphere, the flow around a cyclonic low-pressure center is counterclockwise; in the Southern Hemisphere it is clockwise. The term can be applied to tropical cyclones as well as extratropical cyclones.

The opposite term is anticyklonisk, used for high-pressure systems with diverging, outward-flowing winds and generally more stable or drier conditions.

In Swedish climate and weather reporting, cyklonisk activity is used to describe periods characterized by storm tracks, strong winds, and precipitation driven by cyclones.
