Curon

Curon Venosta, known in German as Graun im Vinschgau, is a small comune in the autonomous province of Bolzano, in South Tyrol, northern Italy. It sits in the western part of the region along the Venosta Valley near the Reschen Pass, on the border with Austria. The area is characterized by Alpine scenery, valleys, and a network of lakes and rivers.

Geographically, Curon Venosta lies at the northern end of Lake Resia (Lago di Resia), an artificial reservoir created in the 1920s to support hydroelectric power production. The reservoir flooded parts of the old village centers, leading to relocation of residents and the construction of new settlements on higher ground. The landscape remains popular for outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling, and winter sports, and it lies along routes connecting Italy with the Alpine passes.

Historically, the region was part of the County of Tyrol and, after World War I, became part of Italy. The municipality is bilingual, with both German- and Italian-speaking communities, and signage and administration reflect this dual heritage.

A prominent feature of Curon Venosta is the submerged church tower that rises from the waters of Lago di Resia. Erected in the 14th century, the tower survives as a recognizable landmark and symbol of the area, visible in many photographs, especially at low water levels, and it draws visitors interested in the region’s history and scenery.

The economy is primarily local and tourism-oriented, with emphasis on outdoor recreation, cultural heritage, and regional agriculture. Curon Venosta forms part of the broader South Tyrolean cultural and linguistic landscape, balancing Alpine traditions with contemporary tourism.
