The term is not a formal discipline in itself but serves as a convenient label in journalism, policy discussions, and some scholarly writing to indicate relevance to cults without specifying a particular group.

In sociology, anthropology, and religious studies, scholars study cultrelated topics to understand group formation, leadership structures, charisma, recruitment practices, doctrinal control, and social dynamics that bind members. They also examine the roles of isolation, information control, and social reinforcement in maintaining commitment, as well as mechanisms of boundary maintenance and conformity within groups.
