Cufffunksjon

Cufffunksjon is a cross-disciplinary term used in Norwegian-language technical literature to describe the function of a cuff—a structure that wraps around an opening, limb, or channel. Rather than naming a single device, cufffunksjon denotes the role the cuff plays in a system, such as sealing, compression, closure, or stabilization. The term combines the English word cuff with the Norwegian word funksjon (function).

In medicine and medical devices, the cuff of an endotracheal tube or similar catheter inflates to seal a lumen, allowing ventilation and reducing risk of aspiration. The efficiency of cufffunksjon depends on cuff material, inflation pressure, and the geometry of the wrapped surface.

In clothing and textiles, cuffs function to close sleeves or pant legs, retain warmth, and provide fit, using elastic, knit, or folded fabric. In mechanical and fluid systems, inflatable cuffs or hose clamps provide temporary sealing or actuation, while in robotics they enable soft-gripping or tactile control by expanding a cuff around an object.

Because cufffunksjon is not a standardized technical term, its exact meaning is determined by context. The concept emphasizes how the cuff's interaction with its surrounding structure determines performance, safety, and user experience.
