Csillaghegy

Csillaghegy is a residential neighborhood in Budapest, Hungary. It is situated on the northern bank of the Danube, within the city’s Óbuda-Békásmegyer district. The name, from csillag meaning “star” and hegy meaning “hill,” refers to its hillside position overlooking the river.

Geography and transport: The area comprises a hillside belt with terraces and low- to mid-rise housing, interspersed with green spaces. It is linked with central Budapest by bus routes and by the suburban rail and road network; it lies near major access routes to the city center and to the outer districts.

History: Csillaghegy developed as part of Budapest’s outward expansion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, evolving from rural hillside settlement into a modern residential neighborhood. Later additions introduced more housing and amenities in the postwar period.

Today: The neighborhood provides essential services for residents, including shops, schools, and places of worship, and offers access to the Danube’s banks, parks, and riverside promenades. Its elevated position affords views over the city and the river. Csillaghegy is one of Budapest’s outer suburban areas, characterized by its hillside housing and scenic vantage points.
